Over the last twenty years Robert Ferrari from Building Diagnosis Centre was involved with local government civil works projects where, with other specialists, he played an important role and was recently recognized.
AWARD - Parramatta Footbridge
Parramatta City Council new Aqueduct/Footbridge replacement over Parramatta River Elizabeth Street (built 2002)
2004 Winner Urban Design Category for the “Design And/Or Construction Of A Local Government/Public Works Project” - Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) NSW Division Environmental Design Excellence Award 2004
The results of the best design team - Our roll: With high credentials of corrosion control and long durability construction, Robert Speirs-Ferrari in the capacity as Consulting Design Diagnostician was appointed to closely work with the design team that comprised of two groups; the artists for public space works - Milne & Stonehouse Artists (Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse) and the bridge engineers - Connell Wagner Consulting Engineers (engineer Boyne Schmidt).
Robert provided advices in Materials Selection and Capabilities, Protective Coating Types and Long Term Suitability for endurance of the special bridge feature namely the full length mild steel curved shaped bridge balustrade with semi-concealed lighting design inside the "Top-Hat" stainless steel curved rail capping. AWARD - Stormwater Treatment
South Sydney City Council Solander Park Erskineville Sydney Stormwater Quality Improvement and Reuse Treatment System (S.Q.I.R.T.S.) - built 2001
- 2002 Winner Environmental Category - Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) NSW Division Environmental Design Excellence Award 2002
- 2001 Recognition - International Water Association 2001 World Water Congress in Berlin Germany
- EPA Case Studies “Solander Park, Erskineville” (pages 98-99) NSW Department of Environment and Conservation - Environment Protection Authority
The Project
A pilot scheme at Solander Park, Erskineville named S.Q.I.R.T.S. (Stormwater Quality Improvement & Reuse Treatment Scheme) with the EPA’s Stormwater Trust Grant Scheme sponsoring Stage 1 of the scheme.
The Council achieved to promote sustainable water management through integration and innovative stormwater solutions with landscape design incorporates sustainable principles to create healthier environments. Stage 1 comprised of 6 components:
- flood mitigation and overland flow path management
- on-site stormwater storage and retention
- gross pollutant capture (including street litter, vegetation, and coarse sediments) from the stormwater stream
- stormwater reuse, which allows for over 90% of water used for irrigation within the park to be sourced from reused stormwater
- comprehensive monitoring of all components, and
- interpretative artworks that aim to educate and interpret the water processes for the community.
The results of the best design team - Our roll: With high credentials of corrosion control and long durability construction, Robert Speirs (Ferrari) in the capacity as Consulting Design Diagnostician was engaged by Council (City of Sydney Council - formerly South Sydney City Council) and Artists (Milne & Stonehouse Artists - Susan Milne and Greg Stonehouse) for the park’s public space works.
Works were the Bronze Sound Sculptures, Underground Acoustic Pipelines (connected to the Gross Pollutant Tank (GPT)) and the GPT concrete access lids incorporating the Terrazzo Design Storyboards for the and the
Robert provided advices in Materials Selection, Capabilities and Long Term Suitability for endurance and during construction of the concrete foundations, underground acoustic pipelines and joined the Artists at meetings/inspections of the Bronze Sound Sculptures during planning and construction at the foundry of the bronze castings. Additionally, superintend these works with the GPT contractor Envirocivil Pty Ltd (Principal Peter Day), attended Council meetings and produced design documentation and specification for the Underground Acoustic Pipelines and concrete foundation plinths for the Bronze Sound Sculptures.
